Why is Renewable Energy Cheap?

Updated: Jun 16, 2021

When it comes to Electricity production, the first thing that comes into mind is the production cost for any production company. When it comes to the consumer, they would always welcome a reliable and cheap electricity source. Renewable energy sources have brilliantly evolved into affordable sources of electricity production. Earlier it was considered that renewable energy sources consist of expensive methods of electricity production, but as technology evolved and the learning curve has increased a lot which subsequently impacts in an extremely positive way for renewable solutions to produce electricity at cheaper rates.

Renewable energy is a long lasting and green source of producing electricity; various methods like wind power systems, solar energy solutions, hydropower, geothermal, biomass solutions, nuclear power plants are the commonly used methods of generating clean energy. These methods are now way cheaper than fossil fuel energy systems.

The costs of fossil fuels and renewable power methods depend largely on two factors: the fuel price that they burn and the power plant’s operating costs. Renewable energy plants are different: their operating costs are comparatively low, and they don’t have to pay for any fuel; their fuel doesn’t have to be dug out of the ground; their energy – the wind and sunlight – comes to them.

What determines the cost of renewable power is the cost of the power plant, the price of the technology itself. The biggest advantage and the low cost of renewable energy methods are that these systems do not need any fuel to run; they work on natural resources, directly increasing their efficiency graph. It is almost a one-time investment, and then one can enjoy it for a long duration. Both production companies and the consumers take these leverages of having low cost; the impacts are immensely positive in the economic growth.

Previously the installation cost of renewable systems was quiet on the higher side, but with the growth in technology that has been dealt with as well, with the evolution in technology now the installation cost has decreased to a huge extent, and now the renewable energy projects are installed on much cheaper rates. The maintenance cost on renewable systems is also very low compared to fossil fuel projects; the systems can be operated with less staff, which positively impacts the production companies. Low production cost is directly proportional to cheap electricity production; therefore, the consumer tariffs are also on the lower side; in short, it’s a win-win situation for both the production party and for the consumers.
